Mike Gurrola played upright and electric bass in Join The Band jazz bands (sometimes doing two bands in one eight week session) from June 2005 through October 2006. Mike also played guitar in one blues band and in the John Marx Blues Workshop one session and he also took composition lessons from John Mizenko. This intense period with Join The Band played an important role in Mike's successful audition for entry in the prestigious Los Angeles County High School for the Arts (Arts High) where Mike is currently (Spring 2008) a Junior and where he has been studying and playing jazz since September 2006.

Currently Mike is the principal jazz bassist at Arts High performing in the “A” Combo, the Big Band, and the Vocal Jazz rhythm section. The “A” Combo and Vocal Jazz groups both took 2nd place at the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey in April, 2008. Mike was also a part of the “A” Combo that took 2nd place in March, 2007 at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Festival. He was awarded an Outstanding Musicianship Award at Berklee and an Outstanding Soloist Award at Monterey. Mike was also selected to be the bassist in the 2008 Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and will be performing with them at the North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Holland in July, 2008 and at the Monterey Jazz Festival in September, 2008.

Recently Mike was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Berklee College of Music 5 Week Summer Workshop 2008 with drummer Terri Lynne Carrington. Arts High awarded Mike with the Ray Brown Scholarship 2008 for music lessons with John Clayton.

Mike has had a successful independent performing career, playing over 40 shows in the first 2 years since graduating from Join The Band. He has performed in local restaurants and also in the big jazz clubs in the area such as Catalina's Jazz Club in Hollywood, the Jazz Bakery in Culver City, and the Pasadena Jazz Institute. Mike was also the featured artist in the Young Artist Jazz Series at Catalina's in September 2007.

Comfortable in the band leader role (which he has done some 20 times) and in the side man role, the bands Mike has played in or led have included a who's who list of local professional musicians such as Gilbert Castellanos, Zane Musa, David Sills, Javier Vergara, Josh Nelson, Derrick Finch, Austin Peralta, Kevin Kanner, Tony Austin, Dan Schnell, Nick Mancini, Graham Dechter, and many more.

Mike has been taking bass lessons continuously for 4 years for classical from David Young and for jazz from Sam Minaie, Carlitos del Puerto, Dan Lutz, Joe Sanders, Zac Mathews, Nick Mancini, and Derrick Finch. Along the way Mike has also done workshops, master classes, or single music lessons from John Clayton, Christoph Luty, Bob Hurst, Christian McBride, Ben Street, Reggie Hamilton, and Benny Green.
